Google’s New Home Speaker: Is More AI Really More Useful? (Full Review) (2026)

Google's new Home Speaker is an intriguing device, but it fails to deliver on the promise of a truly intelligent and useful smart speaker. While the device boasts advanced AI capabilities, it falls short in several key areas, leaving me wondering if it's worth the investment.

One of the main selling points of the Home Speaker is its integration with Google's Gemini AI. However, my experience with Gemini was more frustrating than helpful. When I asked about audiobook services, Gemini went on a lengthy monologue about various options, failing to acknowledge that it couldn't actually play audiobooks I owned. This lack of specificity and reliability is a significant drawback, as it undermines the very purpose of a smart speaker.

The old Google Assistant, in comparison, was more straightforward and reliable. It could provide concise and accurate information, even if it sometimes read summaries from websites. Gemini, on the other hand, often feels like it's reading from a script, and its responses can be verbose and difficult to follow. While it can remember context and answer follow-up questions, it doesn't always provide the direct and trustworthy information I seek.

The Home Speaker's design is unassuming, with a flattened top and a light ring to indicate its status. It's a subtle upgrade from the Nest Mini and Nest Audio, but the sound quality doesn't match the price. The weak bass and tinny highs make it an underwhelming choice for music lovers, and the touch controls feel flimsy.

The real innovation lies in the device's AI capabilities, but it's not enough to justify the high price tag. The built-in AI hardware makes responses faster, but I struggled to find any unique advantages over the regular Google Assistant. Gemini's Live mode, which requires a subscription, offers a more natural conversation experience, but it's not a compelling reason to pay extra.

In my opinion, the Home Speaker is a step backward for smart speakers. While it has some impressive features, the lack of consistency and reliability in Gemini's responses, combined with the mediocre sound quality, makes it a disappointing addition to the market. Google needs to address these issues if it wants to regain its position as a leader in smart home technology.
