Work the plan
- Cast on 40; join without twisting. Work k1, p1 rib for your cuff, then knit until 42 total leg rounds.
- Heel flap: work back and forth on 20 stitches, holding 20 instep stitches. RS: sl1 purlwise with yarn behind, knit to end. WS: sl1 purlwise with yarn in front, purl to end. Work 20 flap rows.
- Heel turn RS: sl1, k14, ssk, turn. WS: sl1, p10, p2tog, turn. There are 3 unworked stitches at each outer side.
- Next RS: sl1, knit to one stitch before the gap, ssk across the gap, turn. Next WS: sl1, purl to one stitch before the gap, p2tog across the gap, turn. Repeat until all side stitches are used: 12 heel stitches remain.
- Knit the heel stitches, pick up 11 stitches along each flap side (including one corner), and knit the 20 instep stitches: 54 total. Place markers either side of the instep.
- Decrease round: knit to 3 before the first instep marker, k2tog, k1; knit the instep; after its marker k1, ssk, knit to end. Alternate decrease and plain rounds 7 times, ending on the final decrease, to reach 40.
- Work plain until heel-to-toe length is 19.64 cm. Divide into four equal sectors. Decrease before each marker with k2tog; alternate decreases and plain rounds until 8 stitches remain (15 rounds). Draw closed. Make the second sock the same way.
Use your measurements
Choose a heel flap and gusset for a shaped sock, or a heel-free tube. Both plans use four equal toe sectors; use washed gauge and try on before starting the toe.
