Moss stitch: stitch positions and working loops2 working loops shownUS crochet termsOne top position for each completed stitch
Schematic of top positions and loops on the hook. Follow the named stitch’s insertion and pull-through sequence below.

Work the stitch

  1. For this even-chain version, chain 16. Work a single crochet into the fourth chain from the hook.
  2. Repeat chain 1, skip 1 foundation chain, single crochet in the next chain, ending with single crochet.
  3. Chain 2 and turn. Single crochet in the next chain-one space; repeat chain 1 and single crochet in each following chain-one space. Work the final single crochet into the turning-chain space.

Count the edge correctly

The turning chains form the edge space. Keep that space in every row and check both edges before turning; missing the final space narrows the fabric.

Try a counted sample

The 16-chain foundation gives seven worked single crochets across the first row. Keep the alternating spaces visible and repeat the later-row sequence for a small sample.

Where to use it

Also called linen or granite stitch, this repeat suits color changes and planned pooling. Change yarn at the final pull-through of the last single crochet in a row.
