German short rows
A turned stitch is pulled into a double stitch and later worked as one to shape extra rows.
Work the technique
Work to the turning point and turn. Bring yarn forward, slip the first stitch purlwise, pull yarn firmly up and over the needle to make two visible legs. Move yarn to the position required for the next knit or purl stitch. Later, knit or purl both legs together as one stitch.
Try it on a sample
On 20 stitches, knit 16 and turn; make the double stitch, purl 12 and turn; make another double stitch, knit to end, treating both legs of the first double stitch as one.
Check and recover
Do not count the two legs as two stitches. If a hole opens, check that the turning stitch was pulled firmly and both legs were worked together.
