Punch needle for beginners

A correctly threaded punch tool makes repeated loops through a taut compatible backing.

Gather and work

Match tool, yarn and backing. Stretch the backing tightly, thread the tool as its instructions show, insert to its depth stop and slide close to the surface before the next punch. Keep the supply yarn free to move.

First project

Fill a 5 × 5 cm block, keeping loop height and spacing consistent. Weigh the yarn used to plan a larger design.

Keep the work even

Lifting the tool high between punches pulls loops out. A supply snag or loose backing also causes missing loops. Use the tool carefully and finish the back according to the item’s purpose.
