Darn socks and repair knits

Stabilise the worn area before building a replacement web or following existing loops with duplicate stitch.

Gather and work

For a hole, extend a woven darning patch into sound fabric: lay parallel warp strands over the opening, then weave over and under them with alternating rows. For thinning stockinette, duplicate-stitch over sound loops before they break.

First project

Repair a small hole in a spare swatch using matching-weight yarn and a darning egg or rounded support. Keep the patch at the fabric’s resting size.

Keep the work even

Pulling the repair tight shrinks the area. Extend beyond weak fibres and use a compatible washable yarn so the patch and garment finish together.
