Knitting chart symbols

A symbol describes the stitch as seen from the right side; wrong-side rows often require the opposite physical stitch.

Work the technique

For the chart studio key, an empty square means knit on RS/purl on WS; a dot means purl on RS/knit on WS; a circle means yarn-over; / means k2tog and \ means ssk on the RS. Read the chart key for any pattern you use.

Try it on a sample

Chart a 6 × 6 seed-stitch sample. Read RS rows right to left and WS rows left to right when knitting flat.

Check and recover

In the round every round reads from the same edge. A shaded no-stitch square is not a stitch: skip it when a shaping chart changes width.
