Machine knitting first sample

A machine-knit sample depends on needle selection, stitch size, yarn tension and the machine’s carriage settings.

Gather and work

Follow the machine’s own cast-on and weighting procedure. Start with smooth compatible yarn and 20 working needles. Check that latches move freely; set the carriage for plain knitting and feed yarn through the specified tension path.

First project

Knit 30 rows, secure the live stitches, let the sample relax and finish it using the yarn care directions. Measure after drying.

Keep the work even

Stop when the carriage resists; do not force it. Dropped edge stitches can come from unsuitable weights or yarn feed. Transfer and ribbing procedures differ by machine.
