Yarn embroidery on knitted fabric

Duplicate stitch follows a knit V with a new strand, covering it without cutting the original stitch.

Gather and work

Thread a blunt needle with compatible yarn. Come up at the base of a V, pass behind both legs of the stitch above, then return through the same base hole. Move to the next V on the wrong side.

First project

Embroider a 5 × 5 heart grid on stockinette. Match each chart cell to one knit stitch and keep tails on the reverse face.

Keep the work even

Pulling tighter than the base stitch makes a pucker. A yarn much thicker than the fabric can distort it; try the motif on a spare sample.
