Measure for a knitted garment

Measure the wearer, add the intended ease and check the actual finished schematic before choosing a count.

Chest and length

Measure chest circumference at the fullest point with a level tape. Add the desired garment ease: a 92 cm chest with 8 cm positive ease gives a 100 cm finished body. Measure desired length from shoulder or underarm according to construction.

Arms and openings

Measure upper arm, wrist, sleeve length and a comfortable neck opening. Try an existing well-fitting garment as a second comparison. Record actual measurements rather than assuming an age or size label has universal dimensions.

Connect measurements to gauge

Multiply finished centimetres by washed stitches per centimetre. Raglan and sleeve calculations must leave enough sleeve and underarm room when the body is split.
