Classic granny square crochet pattern
Each round has four corners. Work three double crochets for every cluster, chain two at each corner and chain one between the clusters along a side.
Your round counts
Round 4 has 48 double crochets, 16 clusters and four corner spaces.
| Round | Clusters | Double crochets | Side spaces |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 | 12 | 0 |
| 2 | 8 | 24 | 4 |
| 3 | 12 | 36 | 8 |
| 4 | 16 | 48 | 12 |
Start the centre
Chain four and slip stitch into the first chain to make a ring. Chain three; this counts as the first double crochet.
Round 1: four corners
Work two double crochets into the ring. Chain two. Repeat three double crochets and chain two three more times. Slip stitch into the top of the starting chain three. Count twelve double crochets, including the starting chain.
Round 2: grow each corner
Slip stitch to the next corner space. Chain three, work two double crochets, chain two and three double crochets in that same corner. Chain one to move to the next corner. In each remaining corner work three double crochets, chain two and three double crochets, then chain one. Join into the starting chain three.
Round 3 and onward
Begin in a corner as before. Work three double crochets into every side chain-one space, with chain one between clusters. Each corner always receives three double crochets, chain two and three double crochets. Join into the starting chain three after completing all four sides.
Finish and measure
Fasten off and weave in the ends. Wash and dry the square as the yarn label directs, then measure its finished width and height. The stitch count does not prescribe a finished size: your yarn, hook and tension set that measurement.
