Crochet magic ring

A sliding loop lets you tighten the centre of a US single-crochet round.

Work the technique

Wrap yarn into a loop, insert the hook, pull up working yarn and chain 1 (not counted). Work 6 sc into the loop around both ring strand and tail. Pull the tail to close; mark the first sc.

Try it on a sample

Round 1 has 6 sc. Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (12). Round 3: [sc, increase] 6 times (18).

Check and recover

If the ring opens, weave the tail through the centre in more than one direction. Use a chained ring when the chosen slippery yarn will not hold a secure sliding centre.
