Measure a repeat in stitches
Work with your intended yarn, stitch and tool. Count from one colour change to the next until the full colour order repeats. If the same shade occurs twice within the cycle, enter each run separately. Check several cycles rather than measuring only the first length.
For an 18-stitch repeat made of three six-stitch runs, compare widths of 17, 18 and 19. The starting phase of each row shifts by one stitch, stays aligned, or shifts the other way. Alternating row direction also changes the pattern visible on the front.
Match the preview to actual fabric
The model assumes stable whole-stitch colour runs and no yarn consumed outside the grid. It does not estimate yarn length, changing tension, turning chains or colour transitions inside a stitch. Use a sample before making a full project, and do not treat square cells as the physical stitch aspect ratio.
Measure the finished swatch and estimate a uniform rectangle from its mass.
