Wraps per inch yarn chart
Wrap yarn side by side without stretching it, measure the wraps in one inch and compare the result with a swatch.
Measure a sample
Wrap a smooth ruler over at least two inches. Do not squash strands together or leave gaps. Count wraps and divide by inches covered; repeat at several parts of the yarn.
Use WPI as a starting comparison
Typical working bands: lace 18 or more; fingering 14–18; sport 12–14; DK 11–12; worsted 9–11; bulky 6–8; super bulky 5–6. Boundaries overlap and fuzzy or uneven yarn can wrap differently. The project’s actual stitch gauge is the deciding measurement.
