Single crochet: stitch positions and working loops2 working loops shownUS crochet termsOne top position for each completed stitch
Schematic of top positions and loops on the hook. Follow the named stitch’s insertion and pull-through sequence below.

Work the stitch

  1. Insert the hook under both top loops of the indicated stitch.
  2. Yarn over and pull a loop through the fabric: two loops remain on the hook.
  3. Yarn over again and draw through both loops. One working loop remains.

Count the edge correctly

For this practice convention, chain 1 to turn. It is a height adjustment, not an extra stitch; work into the first actual stitch.

Try a counted sample

Chain 16. Start in the second chain from the hook and make 15 single crochets. Each following row also has 15 stitches.

Where to use it

Dense washcloths, firm bags and amigurumi use this short stitch. If the row shrinks, look for an unworked first or last stitch.
