Weaving for beginners

Interlace weft through alternating warp openings to make a plain-weave sample.

Gather and work

Use a small frame loom, smooth strong warp and a blunt needle or shuttle. Tension parallel warp ends evenly. Pass weft over one/under one, reverse the sequence on the next pick and leave a curved weft arc before beating.

First project

Warp 20 ends and weave 30 picks. Place spacers at the base and maintain the same edge width as the sample grows.

Keep the work even

Pulling weft taut before beating narrows the sides. Leave room for take-up, and finish the warp ends before cutting the cloth from the frame.
