Rug hooking for beginners
A rug hook pulls short loops of yarn or fabric strips through a stretched backing.
Gather and work
Choose a backing whose openings fit the hook and material. Hold material below the frame; push the hook down, catch it and lift a loop above the backing. Move to the next opening with enough slack for an even loop.
First project
Fill a small outlined circle, working its edge first and its centre in rows. Turn the frame as needed to avoid forcing the hook sideways.
Keep the work even
Crowded loops buckle the backing. Keep an even height and trim and secure the perimeter before turning the sample into an item.
