Slip stitch: stitch positions and working loops1 working loops shownUS crochet termsOne top position for each completed stitch
Schematic of top positions and loops on the hook. Follow the named stitch’s insertion and pull-through sequence below.

Work the stitch

  1. Insert the hook into the stitch or space named in the pattern.
  2. Yarn over and pull through the insertion point and the existing hook loop together.
  3. Keep the working loop loose enough to match the surrounding fabric.

Count the edge correctly

When joining a round, enter the exact starting chain or stitch specified. A joining slip stitch does not add another counted double crochet to a granny-square round.

Try a counted sample

Make a short chain and join its first chain to its last with a slip stitch. Confirm that the loop is untwisted before building a round into the ring.

Where to use it

Use it to close rounds, travel to a corner space or create a low-profile seam. Tight slip stitches can make the next insertion point difficult to find.
