Spinning yarn for beginners

Draft fibre, add twist and wind a single before deciding whether to ply it.

Gather and work

Use prepared wool, a spindle and a leader. Attach the fibre to the leader, spin the spindle in one chosen direction and pinch to stop twist entering the drafting supply. Draft a small amount, release the pinch to let twist enter, then wind the finished yarn onto the shaft.

First project

Spin a short single, let a slack section fold back on itself and observe the prospective two-ply. Ply in the opposite direction to balance the original twist.

Keep the work even

Too little twist lets the single break; too much twist makes drafting difficult. Keep fingers away from powered equipment and tie the skein securely before washing.
