Jumbo yarn

Jumbo is category 7, the thickest standard numbered group. The stockinette guide is six stitches or fewer across four inches; there is no universal upper diameter in this category.

These are starting ranges. Follow the gauge in your pattern and measure the washed fabric.

Working with this weight

Oversized stitches and selected hand-worked projects. Plan storage, handling and cleaning alongside dimensions. For a large blanket, the dry sample mass gives a more useful estimate of the finished object’s mass than the outer size of a ball.

Compare a replacement

Do not invent a 40 mm category limit from a conversion table. Hand-worked and tool-worked jumbo fabrics can have very different loop sizes; use the maker’s own sample for the chosen technique.

Worked check

A 20 × 20 cm dry swatch weighing 50 g scaled to a 100 × 120 cm rectangle gives 1,500 g of matching fabric, before adding any separate border or reserve.
