Double crochet: stitch positions and working loops3 working loops shownUS crochet termsOne top position for each completed stitch
Schematic of top positions and loops on the hook. Follow the named stitch’s insertion and pull-through sequence below.

Work the stitch

  1. Yarn over, then insert the hook into the indicated stitch.
  2. Yarn over and pull up a loop: three loops are on the hook.
  3. Yarn over and draw through two loops. Yarn over and draw through the remaining two.

Count the edge correctly

In this practice convention, the turning chain of 3 counts as the first double crochet. Skip the first stitch after turning and include the top of the previous turning chain at the far edge.

Try a counted sample

Chain 17. Starting in the fourth chain from the hook, work 14 double crochets. The three skipped chains count as stitch 1, giving a 15-stitch row.

Where to use it

Tall posts make open blankets and classic granny-square clusters. Count the turning chain consistently or one edge will gain extra stitches.
