Learn-to-knit garter neckwarmer
A flat, buttoned project for practising cast on, the knit stitch, garter fabric, in-row buttonholes, bind off, blocking, and secure button attachment. The length is fitted to the wearer rather than fixed by a row count.
Pattern overview
Knit one garter-stitch rectangle from one short end to the other. When it wraps comfortably around the wearer's neck with enough overlap for buttoning, make three buttonholes across the width, work five more rows, and bind off. After washing and blocking, align and sew three buttons to the opposite end.
Materials and gauge
Gather everything before casting on. The source pattern has no fixed finished dimensions or mandatory gauge. Swatch with either suggested needle size and choose the fabric you prefer.

Use a knitted cast on if you know it for both the starting edge and the three stitches restored above each buttonhole. If any cast-on or bind-off movement is new, practise it on a small scrap before working the project.
An in-row BO3 uses the already-worked live stitch immediately before the gap as the first stitch passed over. Work a new stitch, pass the previous stitch over it, and repeat until three stitches have been bound off. The buttonhole row begins with 25 stitches and ends with 16; the following cast-on row adds nine stitches and returns to 25.

Make the neckwarmer
Swatch and choose a needle
Knit a garter-stitch swatch with US 10 / 6 mm or US 10½ / 6.5 mm needles. Wash it as the yarn label directs. Choose the needle that gives a comfortable, cohesive fabric with enough body to support buttons.
Cast on
Cast on 25 stitches, preferably with the knitted cast-on method. Turn the work.
Knit the body
Knit every stitch of every row. Continue in garter stitch until the rectangle wraps from one side of the neck to the other with a comfortable overlap for buttoning. Test it without stretching the fabric and never plan a tight fit around the neck.
Make three buttonholes
Buttonhole row: K4, (BO3, K4) three times. 16 sts remain.
Restore row: K4, (CO3, K4) three times. 25 sts.
Use the knitted cast on to restore three stitches across each gap, working carefully so the new loops are not twisted or overly tight.
Finish the knitted end
Knit five more rows. Bind off all 25 stitches loosely, cut the yarn leaving a useful tail, and pull the tail through the final loop. Weave in both ends without drawing the fabric inward.
Block, choose, and attach the buttons
Wash and block according to the yarn label before buying buttons; the openings may change. Choose buttons that pass through snugly but without force. Lay the ends in their buttoned position, mark the point opposite each hole, and place a stabilizer square behind each mark. Sew each button through both the knitted fabric and stabilizer with strong matching thread or embroidery floss. Secure the thread well.
Fit and safety
Check it before wearing
- Fit the neckwarmer comfortably and loosely enough to remove without strain.
- This edition is presented as an adult accessory. Small buttons are a choking hazard; do not use it for infants or young children.
- Inspect every button before wear and repair any looseness immediately.
- Keep knitting needles, scissors, loose buttons, and thread away from children.
- Follow the yarn label for washing, drying, and heat exposure.
